First port call at new terminal

The vessels Ice Moon and Irena Arctica were the first container ships at the new container terminal in Nuuk.

August 14, 2017 was a very special day for the Greenlandic infrastructure. The construction of the new container terminal at Qeqertat has been completed by the contractor, Per Aarsleff Grønland ApS, and the terminal has been delivered to Sikuki.

A ship has now called at the new terminal at SIKUKI Nuuk Harbour for the first time. The occasion was the delivery of two cranes at the port with heavy lift vessel HHL Amur.

54-year old John Rasmussen will be the new CEO of SIKUKI Nuuk Harbour A/S. John Rasmussen was the COO and vice president in the Greenlandic shippingline Royal Arctic Line for a number of years. He is also former member of the Board of Directors in SIKUKI Nuuk Harbour.

Construction work resumes after the Christmas holidays

Most of the activity has now been resumed, including underwater blasting, rock work and building construction.
Permission for underwater blasting

Permission to carry out underwater blasting was granted following two tests to verify noise calculations and the first actual blast in connection with construction took place on 11th December 2015.

The financing of the SIKUKI port has been given global attention where the American lawyers acting on behalf of SIKUKI in obtaining the best possible finance available in the market, were given the highest recommendation by the FT.com, the internet arm of Financial Times.

Aarsleff has taken the Thrymur drill rig into use after receiving permission from the Department of Nature and the Environment to carry out two test blasts.
Foundation for the workshop

The upper anchors for the first partial stretch of the sheet pile wall have now been installed. Following filling in behind the sheet piling, part of the future quay can now be used to unload sand and rock from the dredging.

Construction work is well under way. Part of the foundation for the administration building has been poured and work has started on the foundation for the warehouse.
Beacon taken down due to blasting

Work continues with sheet piling. At the same time, work is taking place further south with casting for the anchor beam (on the right in the picture).
Activities in port

Sheet piling work is well under way. About 10% of the sheet piles have been driven into place and the new quay front is taking shape. There is still a long way to go before the port is complete. At the moment, the piles stand in the middle of the water and the area behind the sheet piling has to be filled in. Material for this will be blasted out on Fyrø.

Contractor found for new harbour in Nuuk

On January 29th 2015 the Government of Greenland gave its approval to Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S’s choice of contractor for the construction of the new harbour in Nuuk and gave the go ahead to start work on preparations.
